Are solar panels worth it in the UK?
Even with British weather, solar stacks up for many homes. Here's the honest picture.
Solar works in the UK — panels generate from daylight, not just direct sun. Whether it's "worth it" depends on your roof, your usage and whether you add a battery.
When solar is worth it
- You have a reasonably unshaded roof (south, east or west-facing all work).
- You use electricity during the day, or add a battery to shift it to evening.
- You want protection from rising electricity prices.
- You can benefit from 0% VAT while it applies.
The battery question
Without a battery, surplus daytime generation is exported for a small payment. A battery stores it for evening use — significantly increasing how much of your own free electricity you actually use.

What about cloudy British weather?
A common myth is that solar doesn't work in the UK. In fact, panels generate from daylight, not just direct sunshine — so they produce power even on overcast days, just less than in bright sun. The UK gets enough daylight for solar to be worthwhile across most of the country, which is why there are now well over two million solar installations nationwide.
Making the most of it
- Use big appliances (washing, dishwasher) during daylight hours.
- Add a battery to shift daytime generation to the evening.
- Take advantage of 0% VAT while it applies.
