Energy-saving tips room by room
Going room by room is the easiest way to spot waste. Here's a practical walk through the whole house.
Sometimes the clearest way to save energy is to walk through your home room by room. Here's what to look for in each.
Kitchen
- Only boil the water you need; put lids on pans.
- Use the right-size hob ring for the pan.
- Run the dishwasher only when full, on eco mode.
- Use an air fryer or microwave for small meals instead of the oven.
- Keep fridge/freezer well-maintained and not over-cold.
Living room
- Switch the TV and devices off at the wall, not just standby.
- Close curtains at dusk to keep heat in.
- Keep furniture away from radiators.
- Use LED bulbs and lamps rather than overhead lighting where you can.
Bedrooms
- Turn down radiators in rooms you use less with TRVs.
- Use draught-proofing on windows.
- Unplug phone chargers once devices are full.
Bathroom
- Shorter showers; a water-efficient showerhead.
- Fix dripping hot taps.
- Use the extractor fan only as long as needed.
Hallways & whole-home
- Draught-proof the front door (brush, letterbox, keyhole).
- Insulate the loft hatch.
- Set the heating on a timer for when you're actually home.
- Bleed radiators across the house at the start of the heating season.
Make it a routine
Do a quick room-by-room sweep at the start of each winter — bleed radiators, check draughts, swap any dead bulbs for LEDs — and you'll head into the cold months running efficiently.
