Is loft insulation worth it?
Short answer: for most homes, yes — it's one of the few upgrades that often pays for itself. Here's the honest detail.
Loft insulation is frequently called the best-value home energy upgrade, and for good reason. But "worth it" depends on your home, so let's look at it properly.
The headline figure
The Energy Saving Trust estimates loft insulation saves a gas-heated semi-detached home around £580 a year, and a detached home around £355 a year, when going from an uninsulated loft to 270mm (2026 prices). Savings are smaller for a top-up, and vary by property and tariff.
The case for
- Around a quarter of a home's heat is lost through an uninsulated roof.
- It's relatively cheap — from around £1,400 fully fitted.
- It's fast and clean — usually a single day, no disruption.
- The savings recur every year, for the life of the insulation.
When it's most worth it
If your loft is uninsulated or has old, thin insulation (under ~100mm), the upgrade is almost always worthwhile. If you already have a full 270mm in good condition, there's less to gain.
The honest exception
If your loft is already insulated to full depth and in good shape, your money is better spent elsewhere — walls, boiler or draught-proofing. A free survey tells you which camp you're in.

How quickly does it pay back?
Because the savings recur every year for decades while the cost is one-off, loft insulation is one of the faster-paying home upgrades. The exact payback depends on your starting point: a completely uninsulated loft pays back fastest, while topping up existing insulation takes a little longer but still adds up. Either way, you keep saving long after the insulation has paid for itself.
What to check before you commit
- Measure your existing insulation depth — under 270mm means there's room to improve.
- Check for any signs of damp or leaks, which should be fixed first.
- Decide whether you need loft boarding for storage, which is an optional extra.
