7 signs it's time for a new boiler

Boilers rarely die without warning — they drop hints first. Spotting them early means replacing on your terms.

A boiler replacement is a grudge purchase nobody plans for. Catching the warning signs early lets you replace calmly rather than in an emergency. Here are the signs worth watching.

1. It's over 10–12 years old

Even well-maintained boilers lose efficiency with age. If yours is in double figures and isn't condensing, it's likely costing you more each winter.

2. You're topping up pressure constantly

Occasional top-ups are normal. Every week or two points to a leak or failing part.

3. Rising bills with no change in usage

A tired boiler burning fuel inefficiently is a prime suspect.

4. Strange noises

Banging, gurgling or kettling usually means limescale or circulation problems.

5. A yellow flame, not blue

A healthy gas flame is crisp blue. Yellow can indicate incomplete combustion — get it checked by a Gas Safe engineer.

6. Frequent repairs

Once you've paid for two or three call-outs in a year, a new boiler with a fresh warranty often makes more sense.

7. Slow or uneven heating

Rooms taking an age to warm can signal a struggling boiler.

What does a new boiler cost?

A straightforward combi swap typically starts from around £1,750, fully fitted. See our boiler replacement page.
